IIT Delhi DMSE Launches Comic Brochure for Materials Science

IIT Delhi's Materials Science Department Unveils Groundbreaking Comic Brochure

In a bold move to transform public perception, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at IIT Delhi has introduced a pioneering comics-style brochure. Titled 'DMSE – Delivering a Material Safari Experience', this innovative publication aims to demystify the complex world of materials engineering through an engaging and humorous narrative.

Bringing Science to Life with Prof Padarth

At the heart of this creative endeavor is Prof Padarth, a newly designed mascot who serves as the department's sutradhar or storyteller. Guiding a curious student on a safari-themed adventure, Prof Padarth explores diverse terrains of materials science, including metals, ceramics, polymers, data science, and emerging smart materials. With wit and everyday analogies, this light-hearted character breaks down abstract concepts, illustrating how materials engineering profoundly impacts daily life.

A Serious Mission Behind the Playful Approach

The comic's playful tone belies a serious objective: to make science accessible beyond laboratory walls and highlight its real-world connections. Prof Jayant Jain, head of DMSE, emphasized, "This comic was conceived to herald an era of bringing the fun aspects of STEM to the fore. Materials engineering is a deeply creative and inspiring field, and we wanted a medium that could engage students and non-technical audiences alike." Through Prof Padarth's adventures, the department hopes to spark curiosity and showcase the excitement inherent in understanding the materials that shape our world.

Collaboration Between Science and Design

The initiative resulted from a close collaboration between science and design experts. A team of four DMSE faculty members partnered with Prasenjit Chatterjee, a former IIT Delhi student from the design department, to develop characters, visual language, and storyline. Prof R Lakshmi Narayan, who led the project, explained, "The idea is to let students—who can access the brochure in print or online—view materials as something they experience daily, making the discipline feel natural and logical rather than highly technical."

Future Plans and Broader Outreach

This first edition marks only the beginning of DMSE's outreach efforts. A series of comics is planned to capture the department's research projects, teaching methodologies, and evolving identity through art and storytelling. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to communicate science in ways that are accessible, culturally resonant, and inclusive, moving away from viewing materials science as intimidating or purely technical.

By blending education with entertainment, IIT Delhi's DMSE is setting a new standard for engaging the public with STEM fields, fostering a deeper appreciation for the materials that underpin modern life.
