IIT Bombay Student's Tragic Death: Police Detail Withdrawn Behavior and Counseling Sessions

Police investigating the tragic death of IIT Bombay student Naman Agarwal have revealed concerning details about his final days, including that the 21-year-old was seeking professional counseling and appeared increasingly withdrawn to friends before the incident. The second-year BTech (Civil Engineering) student died after falling from a hostel building on the prestigious institute's campus in the early hours of Wednesday.

Counseling Sessions and Withdrawn Behavior

According to police officials who recorded statements from fellow students, including Agarwal's roommate, the young man had visited the hospital inside the IIT Bombay campus on February 2 and February 3 on consecutive days. During these visits, he met with a professional counselor he had been consulting. Friends described Agarwal as academically bright but quiet, noting that he had appeared particularly withdrawn in the days leading up to the tragic incident.

"During questioning of his friends, we learnt that the 21-year-old had been seeking counselling on campus and appeared reclusive in the days leading up to the incident," a police official stated. The investigation has revealed that Agarwal, a resident of Hostel 3, had gone to the newly inaugurated Hostel 4, from where he is suspected to have fallen around 1:30 AM on Wednesday.

Diary Note and Ongoing Investigation

Police confirmed that Agarwal had written a one-page note in his personal diary, the contents of which are being carefully examined as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities are likely to record the statement of the professional counselor Agarwal was consulting on Thursday to gather more details about their sessions and any concerns that might have been discussed.

"Police are likely to record the statement of the professional Naman Agarwal was consulting on Thursday to gather more details," an official involved in the investigation confirmed. The authorities are also in possession of CCTV footage from a camera installed on the terrace where the incident occurred. An officer revealed that in the footage, Agarwal is seen entering the terrace alone before the tragic fall.

Student Response and Family Grief

Students who were awake at the time of the incident described hearing a loud thud sound that prompted them to rush toward the source of the noise. "When Naman fell from the 9th floor, the hostel was mostly awake as many students sleep late. Students heard a loud thud and rushed toward the source of noise and were shocked by what they saw," recounted another student who witnessed the aftermath. Institute security was immediately alerted as students began gathering at the spot.

On Wednesday night, IIT Bombay students held a condolence meet in his memory, gathering to mourn the loss of their fellow student. Meanwhile, outside the Rajawadi Hospital mortuary where the body was kept, relatives described Agarwal as a hardworking and gifted student who had achieved admission to the prestigious IIT Bombay.

"He was able to get admission to top most IIT Bombay, that is proof enough to know how hard working and bright he has been. It is impossible to believe that he was undergoing any kind of counseling," said Pawan Kumar Goyal, a relative who was in Mumbai to attend a wedding in the extended family. Goyal canceled his plans after receiving the tragic news late Tuesday night.

Forensic Examination and Family Background

The viscera have been preserved and will be sent to the Kalina Forensic Laboratory for chemical analysis, according to official statements. Agarwal's parents were out of town at the time of the incident and have been asked to return to their native place in Rajgadh tahsil in Rajasthan, where the family plans to take Naman's body for final rites.

Goyal provided additional details about the family, noting that Agarwal's father runs a food-grain business and that the student had two sisters. "One of the two sisters is a chartered accountant and the other is an engineering student. All three siblings have been academically bright," Goyal said, adding that the family hopes for a conclusive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The incident has raised questions about mental health support systems on educational campuses and the pressures faced by students in highly competitive academic environments. As the investigation continues, authorities are piecing together the final days of the promising young student whose life ended so tragically.
