IIM Indore Celebrates Graduating Class That Began Journey in Pandemic Shadow

For many students, their academic journey at the Indian Institute of Management, Indore (IIM-I) commenced on cracked phone screens during the nationwide lockdown. For others, it was sparked by fleeting moments of witnessing human struggle that refused to fade from memory. On Saturday, these scattered and uncertain beginnings converged at a shared destination as a batch that started its educational path in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic walked confidently into a future defined by remarkable resilience and clear purpose.

Srishti Kumari: A Testament to Parental Faith and Determination

At the heart of this inspiring narrative is Srishti Kumari from Patna. When she enrolled in 2021, physical classrooms were nonexistent, existing only as digital spaces on screens, while the world outside grappled with pervasive fear and uncertainty. Back in her hometown, her father, Shambhu Nath Keshri, continued operating his modest chemist shop, clinging steadfastly to one quiet conviction. At every family gathering, despite facing skeptical questions and doubts from relatives, he would proclaim with immense pride that his daughter was pursuing studies at the prestigious IIM Indore.

Many relatives remained unconvinced. The idea of sending a daughter hundreds of miles away, investing substantial financial resources in her education, especially amidst a global health crisis, seemed illogical to numerous family members. However, Srishti's parents chose to trust her chosen path unequivocally. Years later, that decisive leap of faith has transformed into a defining milestone. Srishti has now become the first person in her family to secure a corporate position, joining a Chennai-based firm with a compensation package significantly higher than most of her peers.

"People expressed many doubts, but I always maintained unwavering faith in my daughter. Today, those same individuals are calling to offer their congratulations. My daughter has demonstrated conclusively that when provided with equal opportunities, girls are second to none," stated her father, his voice resonating with both profound pride and a sense of vindication. For Srishti, the journey proved as emotionally charged as it was academically rigorous. "We commenced our studies in isolation. There was palpable fear, deep uncertainty, and initially, no authentic experience of campus life. To stand here today, addressing everyone, feels like accomplishing something far greater than merely earning a degree," she reflected.

Kishan's Pivot: From Stable Career to Agricultural Research Mission

If Srishti's narrative centered on belief, Kishan's story revolved around discovering a profound sense of purpose. Hailing from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, Kishan had already established a stable career as an academic associate at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. However, a single, impactful experience during a routine bus journey irrevocably altered his trajectory.

"During that bus ride, I observed a group of farmers engaged in a discussion about their financial losses and the severe lack of market access for their agricultural produce. They appeared utterly helpless, and that image remained indelibly etched in my mind," he recalled. Despite possessing no personal background in farming, Kishan made the courageous decision to step away from his secure job and dedicate himself to research within the agricultural sector. His academic work specifically focused on silk and cocoa farmers, aiming to meticulously analyze the structural challenges plaguing their livelihoods.

"I felt compelled to act after witnessing their plight; I could not simply move on. I was driven to comprehend their problems deeply and contribute in any capacity possible. This represents merely the beginning. I aspire to expand this research and collaborate with state governments to develop more effective systems supporting farmers," Kishan explained. His choice exemplifies a broader shift observable among young graduates who are increasingly looking beyond traditional, conventional career paths, motivated by a powerful combination of empathy and ambition.

A Cohort Forged by Adversity and Shared Experience

Srishti and Kishan's experiences resonated powerfully across the entire graduating cohort, a group that largely initiated its academic life during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis. These students navigated the complexities of online classes, endured disrupted daily routines, and witnessed a world in turmoil before finally establishing their footing on the physical IIM Indore campus.

Nearby, Priya Shah from Mumbai eloquently captured the collective emotional weight of the graduation day. "We embarked on this journey confined to our homes, completely uncertain about when normalcy would return. Today, standing here alongside everyone, it profoundly feels as though we have lived through an experience that has permanently transformed us for life," she shared, summarizing the sentiment of a generation of students whose education was uniquely shaped by global adversity.

The graduation ceremony at IIM Indore thus stood not merely as an academic convocation but as a celebration of human resilience, familial support, and the conscious pursuit of meaningful impact. These graduates, having commenced their studies in isolation, now step forward as a united, purpose-driven force ready to contribute to India's future across corporate boardrooms, agricultural fields, and beyond.
