IGNOU Announces Pilot for AI-Driven Learning Module in Pune
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is set to launch a pilot program for an artificial intelligence-powered learning module for one of its courses within the next six months. Vice-Chancellor Uma Kanjilal made this announcement on Tuesday, highlighting the university's commitment to integrating advanced technology into education.
Scaling Up AI Initiatives Across Courses
If the pilot proves successful, IGNOU plans to scale up the AI-driven learning initiative across all applicable courses. This expansion aims to enhance the educational experience for students nationwide by leveraging cutting-edge technology.
Personalized Learning and Automated Support
Kanjilal emphasized that technological advancements are expected to personalize learning pathways for students. The AI module will also automate counselling support and assist faculty members in their teaching responsibilities, making education more accessible and efficient.
Indigenous AI Development and IIT Collaboration
The university plans to use indigenously developed AI technology and is currently in discussions with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) regarding its implementation. This collaboration underscores a focus on homegrown solutions to address educational challenges.
Strict Monitoring Mechanisms for AI Challenges
To address potential issues such as bias, hallucinations, and other AI-related challenges, IGNOU will implement strict monitoring mechanisms. Kanjilal stated, "We cannot leave everything to AI. There will be built-in moderation mechanisms, and both students and staff will be able to flag problematic content."
Utilizing Pune Studio Infrastructure
The newly set-up studio infrastructure at the Pune regional centre will be utilized to record videos and broadcast live, interactive sessions in Marathi through IGNOU-operated Swayam Prabha channels. This initiative aims to cater to regional language learners and enhance digital outreach.
This move by IGNOU represents a significant step towards modernizing open and distance learning in India, with a focus on innovation, inclusivity, and quality education through technology.
