Governor Nazeer Stresses Societal Alignment of Research at JNTU Anantapur Convocation
In a significant address at the 15th convocation ceremony of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer underscored the critical importance of ensuring that research and technological innovations are closely aligned with societal needs to drive sustainable development. The event, held at the NTR Auditorium on Monday, marked a pivotal academic milestone for the institution and its students.
A Landmark Ceremony Celebrating Academic Excellence
The convocation ceremony was a momentous occasion, celebrating the academic achievements of more than 40,000 students who received various degrees. Highlighting the university's robust research capabilities, a total of 74 PhDs were awarded during the ceremony. Additionally, 31 meritorious students were honoured with gold medals in recognition of their exceptional academic performance, showcasing the high standards of education at JNTU Anantapur.
Honorary Doctorate for Dr Tessy Thomas, the 'Missile Woman of India'
In a proud moment for the nation, the university conferred an honorary doctorate upon Dr Tessy Thomas, a distinguished scientist renowned as the 'Missile Woman of India'. This honour was bestowed in recognition of her monumental contributions to India's defence and missile programmes, which have significantly bolstered the country's strategic capabilities on the global stage.
Governor Nazeer's Vision for Education and Development
Addressing the graduating students, Governor Nazeer, who serves as the chancellor, invoked the wisdom of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. He stated that the highest form of education is one that harmonises our life with all existence, emphasizing a holistic approach to learning. The governor also highlighted positive trends in education, noting that Andhra Pradesh's Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for women stands at 36.5%, reflecting steady progress that surpasses the national average.
He praised the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for initiating a transformative shift in higher education across India, fostering innovation and inclusivity. Furthermore, Governor Nazeer commended JNTU Anantapur for its strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with prestigious institutions like IIT Madras. These collaborations provide students with valuable internship opportunities and exposure to industrial safety and regulatory standards, enhancing their practical skills and employability.
Dr Tessy Thomas's Inspiring Journey and Message to Graduates
Dr Tessy Thomas shared her inspiring personal journey, detailing her path from an electrical engineering student to becoming the head of the Agni missile projects at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). She described the convocation as a gateway to limitless opportunities and a tribute to years of unwavering commitment and hard work.
"From Agni-I to Agni-V, our self-reliance has placed India on the global map of defence capabilities," she remarked, highlighting India's advancements in missile technology. Dr Thomas encouraged the graduates to step into the world as innovators and professionals who actively contribute to the nation's rising status as a global power, urging them to embrace challenges and drive progress.
University's Expansive Reach and Legacy
Vice-chancellor Prof H Sudarshana Rao provided insights into the university's extensive network, noting that JNTU Anantapur oversees approximately 130 affiliated colleges across the districts of Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool, and Nellore. He reiterated the university's proud legacy of producing world-class scientists and engineers who have made significant contributions to various fields, both nationally and internationally.
