GEC Buxar Earthquake Safety Fortnight Ends with Mock Drill

Govt Engineering College Buxar Successfully Concludes Earthquake Safety Fortnight

The Earthquake Safety Fortnight organized by Govt Engineering College (GEC) Buxar in collaboration with the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) concluded on Thursday, January 29. The comprehensive two-week program, which ran from January 15 to 29, featured a significant SDRF mock drill conducted by the Bhojpur team, providing students with invaluable hands-on training in disaster response techniques.

Scientific Insights and Practical Training

The event included detailed explanations on the scientific causes of earthquakes and essential safety measures to follow before, during, and after tremors. Organized by the civil engineering department of the college, the program was coordinated by HoD Jeevesh Ujjwal, with assistant professor Annapurna Verma serving as co-coordinator. Faculty, staff, and students participated actively, contributing to the program's overall success.

Leadership Emphasizes Safety Culture

Addressing the gathering, GEC principal Ramnaresh Rai emphasized the critical need for constant alertness and the adoption of safety measures against natural disasters. He highlighted that such initiatives play a vital role in building disaster management skills, fostering social responsibility, and cultivating a strong culture of safety among students.

Competitions and Expert Lecture

As part of the safety fortnight, students engaged in various competitions focused on earthquake preparedness:

  • Painting competition: Won by Sona Rama, a second-year student.
  • Quiz competition: Secured by Devang Kumar, a third-year student.
  • Speech competitions were also held to enhance awareness.

An online expert lecture was delivered by Alok Kumar, associate professor in the department of Geology at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He underscored Bihar's vulnerability, stating, "Bihar falls in a high seismic zone due to active tectonic movements in the Himalayan region. Awareness, safe construction practices, and timely response can significantly reduce loss of life during earthquakes."

Building Resilience Through Education

The Earthquake Safety Fortnight at GEC Buxar not only provided theoretical knowledge but also practical experience through the SDRF mock drill. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance disaster preparedness in regions prone to seismic activity, equipping the next generation of engineers and citizens with the skills needed to respond effectively to natural calamities.
