Eastern India's First MA in Development Studies Launched by IDSK Kolkata

The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) has announced the launch of a groundbreaking two-year master's programme in development studies, marking the first such academic offering in eastern India. The programme will commence in the upcoming academic season, with an initial intake capacity of 30 students. The degree will be formally awarded by the University of Calcutta (CU), solidifying its academic credibility.

Official Announcement and Key Details

The official announcement was made on Friday at the Press Club in Kolkata, with prominent figures including IDSK director Byasdeb Dasgupta, CU Vice-Chancellor Ashutosh Ghosh, and IDSK president Omprakash Mishra in attendance. Dasgupta emphasized the uniqueness of this programme, stating, "This is the only MA programme in development studies in eastern India. With an interdisciplinary approach, the master's programme will orient students towards contemporary social, political, and economic issues."

The curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive methodological training, incorporating essential components such as fieldwork experience, software utilization, and artificial intelligence applications. This holistic approach aims to equip students with practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.

Flexible Exit Options and Future Plans

A notable feature of the programme is its flexible exit option. Students who choose to leave after completing one year will receive an ‘MA certificate course' in development studies, while those who complete the full two-year duration will be awarded a full MA in development studies. This structure allows for adaptability based on individual academic and career goals.

Looking ahead, IDSK has ambitious plans to expand its academic portfolio. The institute intends to introduce two additional master's courses in sustainable development and international relations, further enhancing its role as a center for advanced studies in critical global areas.

IDSK's Academic Legacy and Recent Initiatives

As a ‘sister institute' of the University of Calcutta, IDSK has a strong academic foundation, having run its own PhD programme in development studies since 2016. In recent years, the institute has offered various short-term courses, including a PG Diploma in development studies and specialized programmes on research methods, software applications, and AI.

IDSK has also been proactive in addressing contemporary challenges through new initiatives. The institute recently established the Rabindranath Tagore Centre for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, dedicated to documenting, researching, and formulating policies on climate change and sustainable development in Bengal and surrounding regions. Additionally, the previously defunct Rabindranath Tagore Centre for Human Development Studies has been revived post-pandemic, underscoring IDSK's commitment to ongoing academic and research excellence.

This new MA programme represents a significant step forward in higher education in eastern India, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with pressing global issues through a rigorous and innovative academic framework.
