DSMNRU Launches Innovative Audiobook Studio to Enhance Learning Accessibility

In a significant move towards inclusive education, Dr Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) in Lucknow has unveiled a groundbreaking facility that converts books into audiobooks on demand. This initiative is specifically designed to make learning more accessible for students, with a special focus on those who are visually impaired or differently-abled.

State-of-the-Art Talking Book Studio

The new service is housed in the 'talking book studio' located within the university's Swami Vivekananda central library. Equipped with specialized software, this studio efficiently transforms printed texts into audio formats, catering to the diverse needs of learners. Yashwant Veeroday, the in-charge of the library, highlighted that the studio currently boasts a collection of over 3,500 audiobooks, which are proving to be invaluable resources for students with visual impairments.

Comprehensive Audiobook Collection

The audiobook library is not limited to literary works; it encompasses a wide range of academic materials tailored to various university courses. Specifically, it provides audiobooks for 54 higher education courses, ensuring that students across disciplines can benefit from this service. Additionally, the collection includes NCERT textbooks from classes 6 to 12, making it a valuable tool for school-level education as well.

Beyond academic texts, the studio offers a rich assortment of other materials, such as:

  • Plays, stories, and novels for recreational reading
  • Preparation materials for competitive examinations, including UGC-NET, SSC, UP TET, CTET, and CCC
  • Audiobooks focused on environmental studies
  • English speaking courses to enhance language skills

Impact on Inclusive Learning

This initiative by DSMNRU represents a major step forward in promoting inclusive education. By converting books into audiobooks, the university is breaking down barriers for visually impaired and differently-abled students, allowing them to access educational content with greater ease. The on-demand conversion feature ensures that students can request specific texts as needed, further personalizing their learning experience.

The talking book studio is expected to significantly improve academic outcomes for these students, fostering a more equitable educational environment at DSMNRU. As the facility continues to expand its collection, it sets a precedent for other institutions to follow in enhancing accessibility and support for all learners.
