Dibrugarh University Radio Station Spreads Warmth to Elderly with Radio Gifts

In a heartfelt initiative, the community radio station of Dibrugarh University has brought a wave of companionship and joy to the lives of senior citizens residing in two old age homes in Dibrugarh, Assam. Radio Gyanmalinee, the university's radio station, distributed radio sets to the residents of Pujashree Old Age Home and Asha Old Age Home, aiming to alleviate the quiet and often lonely hours of their daily lives.

Personal Visits and Emotional Connections

The event was marked by a touching turnout, with members of Radio Gyanmalinee personally visiting both homes to hand over the radio sets. The atmosphere was charged with warmth and nostalgia as candid and heartfelt conversations unfolded between the radio station members and the elderly residents. Many of the seniors expressed immense joy and gratitude for the thoughtful gesture, sharing how the radios would serve as a constant companion.

Radio as a Companion and Friend

Prof. Nirode Boruah, vice-chancellor of Majuli University of Culture and a founding member of Radio Gyanmalinee, was present at the event alongside other station members. He emphasized the significance of radio beyond just a medium, stating, "Radio has always been more than just a medium — it is a companion, a friend that speaks to you. We wanted our elderly residents to have that companionship, to have something that fills their hours with music, stories, and voices that make them feel connected to the world."

Celebrating an Anniversary with Community Service

This initiative holds special importance as it coincides with the station's eighth anniversary. The distribution drive was envisioned as a meaningful way to commemorate this milestone by giving back to the community it has served through the airwaves for years. Prof. Boruah added, "It is deeply fulfilling to see a community radio station live up to its true spirit. Reaching out to our elderly citizens in this way reflects the station's commitment to fostering connections and support within our society."

Residents' Delight and Nostalgic Memories

The residents of both old age homes received the radio sets with delight, with many reminiscing about their youth when radio was the heartbeat of every household. They shared memories of growing up listening to radio programs, highlighting how this medium once played a central role in their lives and now promises to bring back that sense of connection and entertainment.

This act of kindness not only provides practical companionship but also reinforces the role of community radio in enhancing social bonds and addressing the emotional needs of vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly in Dibrugarh.
