Delhi Government Greenlights Major Hostel Construction at Maulana Azad Medical College
In a significant move to bolster medical education infrastructure, the Delhi government has approved the construction of two new hostel buildings at Maulana Azad Medical College. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced this decision, emphasizing that it will directly address the growing demand for student accommodation while strengthening the overall educational framework.
Project Details and Financial Allocation
The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), which was chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The comprehensive project carries an estimated cost of Rs 573.41 crore and involves building separate hostels for male and female students directly on the college campus.
According to official statements, the facility for female students will be constructed at Site A with an allocated budget of Rs 269.19 crore. Simultaneously, the boys' hostel will be developed at Site B with a financial outlay of Rs 304.22 crore.
Construction Timeline and Scope
Officials have outlined a detailed timeline for the project's completion. The entire process is expected to span 36 months, which includes:
- Six months dedicated to meticulous planning and preparatory work.
- Thirty months allocated for the actual construction phase.
The project scope is extensive, encompassing both basement and superstructure components. It will involve comprehensive civil and electrical works to ensure modern, functional facilities.
Addressing Critical Infrastructure Needs
The approval comes at a crucial time as student intake at Maulana Azad Medical College has increased substantially in recent years—from 150 to 250 students. This surge has placed immense pressure on existing accommodation facilities, leading to many students having to share rooms.
Compounding this issue is the age of the current hostel buildings, which were constructed between 1965 and 1982. These structures have naturally deteriorated over time, creating an urgent need for new, modern infrastructure.
Implementation and Social Objectives
Land for the construction is already available on campus, and officials anticipate that work will commence within six months following the completion of all necessary administrative and financial approvals.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that this project represents a concrete step toward improving student welfare and ensuring better living conditions. She stated that the initiative will help strengthen the institution's standing while providing enhanced residential facilities that support students' academic growth.
