DAVV IET Anti-Ragging Committee Takes Strict Action, Recommends Expulsion of Four Students

The anti-ragging committee at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) in Indore has taken decisive action against student misconduct. On Saturday, the committee formally recommended the expulsion of four students from their BTech programs following a detailed investigation into serious ragging allegations.

Complaint Details and Allegations

The complaint was filed approximately two weeks ago by multiple first-year students who reported disturbing incidents of harassment and intimidation. According to the allegations, juniors were systematically pressured to approach seniors and forced to give formal introductions under duress. Some students reported being coerced into smoking and required to speak with folded hands and lowered heads in a demeaning manner.

Students who resisted these demands faced exclusion from both academic and cultural activities, creating significant distress among numerous freshers who felt targeted and vulnerable within the hostel environment.

Investigation Findings and Committee Recommendations

During its comprehensive inquiry, the anti-ragging committee meticulously recorded statements from affected students and examined available audio evidence. The investigation identified 12 to 15 students as responsible for the ragging incidents, including some from the second academic year.

The committee determined that the charges against four specific first-year students were particularly severe, warranting the strongest possible disciplinary action. Consequently, the committee has recommended their expulsion from the BTech program. This formal proposal has been forwarded to Vice-Chancellor Rakesh Singhai for final approval and implementation.

Additional Disciplinary Measures

Beyond the recommended expulsions, the committee imposed significant penalties on eight other students found involved in the ragging incidents:

  • Immediate removal from hostel accommodation
  • Individual fines of Rs 10,000 each
  • Daily penalty charges for any delay in payment

Furthermore, three students have been barred from participating in campus placement activities, a sanction that could substantially impact their future career prospects.

Institutional Stance and Reporting

IET Director Pratosh Bansal emphasized the institute's unwavering commitment to maintaining a ragging-free environment. The institution maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy against all forms of ragging and harassment, according to official statements. The complete investigation report has been formally submitted to the University Grants Commission (UGC) in compliance with regulatory requirements.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges educational institutions face in combating ragging culture while demonstrating DAVV IET's proactive approach to addressing such complaints through established disciplinary mechanisms.
