Students express enthusiasm for commerce
Rohit Sharma, a student who secured a seat in BCom, said, “I always wanted to pursue commerce as it opens doors to multiple career options. Getting admission to BCom here feels like a dream come true.” Simran Kaur, another admitted student, added, “I opted for commerce as it balances academic depth with practical career opportunities. I am happy to have made it in the first merit list.”
Shift from arts to liberal arts and commerce
Faculty members observed a change in student preferences. Meena Kapoor, a lecturer at a local college, noted, “Earlier, the arts stream was the conventional option for many. But today, students are shifting toward liberal arts programmes that combine creativity with employment-ready learning. It reflects a changing mindset.” This trend has boosted demand for BCom, which is seen as offering both academic rigor and job prospects.
Anxious wait for second merit list
Not all aspirants have secured admission yet. Arjun Verma, a student hoping for a BCom seat, said, “I couldn’t find my name in the first list, but I am hopeful that the second list will bear good news. BCom is my first choice and I am keeping my fingers crossed.” The counselling sessions saw bustling corridors and anxious parents, underscoring the competitive nature of admissions.

According to college officials, BCom has once again become the most sought-after course, with students valuing its practical career opportunities. The trend reflects a broader shift toward commerce and liberal arts in Ludhiana’s higher education landscape. Both SCD Government College and Government College for Girls are now preparing for subsequent merit lists to accommodate remaining applicants.
