Assam Chief Minister Inaugurates Guwahati Science City to Revolutionize Science Education

In a significant move to enhance scientific learning in the northeastern region, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially inaugurated the Guwahati Science City on Tuesday. Located at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, this state-of-the-art facility is positioned as a major initiative to expand science education across Assam through an engaging edutainment hub.

Joint Development and Massive Investment

The Guwahati Science City has been developed through a collaborative effort between the Assam government and the National Council of Science Museums under the Government of India. With a substantial investment of Rs 288.13 crore, the campus covers an impressive area of approximately 250 bighas. This makes it notably larger than Kolkata's Science City, which spans about 120 bighas, highlighting its scale and ambition.

"Assam gets its own Science City and it will be one of the best in the country," Sarma announced in a post on X, emphasizing the project's national significance. He further noted that among all initiatives undertaken by his government for the new generation, this Science City stands out as the most attractive and leading project.

Interactive Sections and Future Expansions

The complex is designed to offer interactive science learning experiences, with two main sections already completed:

  • Eureka: Focused on hands-on experiments and discoveries.
  • Space Odyssey: Dedicated to astronomy and space exploration.

Additional sections, including Science Innovation and Science Park, are set to be added soon, promising a comprehensive educational environment. The facility aims to inspire curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of scientific principles among visitors of all ages.

Virtual Inauguration of District Science Centres

In conjunction with the Science City launch, Chief Minister Sarma virtually inaugurated five district science centres located at Amingaon, Majuli, Silchar, Kaliabor, and Bongaigaon. These centres, built at a cost of about Rs 178.13 crore, are equipped with:

  1. Science galleries for interactive exhibits.
  2. A 64-seat digital planetarium for immersive astronomical experiences.
  3. An auditorium for lectures and events.

Sarma highlighted that these new facilities will play a crucial role in strengthening scientific and technological learning throughout Assam, making advanced education more accessible in remote areas.

Personal Inspiration and Vision for the Future

Reflecting on his own childhood, Sarma shared a personal anecdote about visiting the science museum in Kolkata, which inspired him to dream of building a world-class science centre in Guwahati. "Area-wise, our Science City is bigger than Kolkata Science City," he stated, underscoring the project's grandeur and its potential to become a premier destination for science enthusiasts.

The Guwahati Science City is expected to serve as a hub for innovation, education, and entertainment, contributing to Assam's development in science and technology. By providing interactive and engaging learning opportunities, it aims to nurture the next generation of scientists and thinkers in the region.
