AMU Engineering Student Dies by Suicide After Video Call to Father
A 20-year-old engineering student at Aligarh Muslim University died by suicide in her hostel room on Monday night. The tragic incident occurred moments after she informed her father during a video call that she was ending her life.
Her father, currently working in Saudi Arabia, received the distressing call from his daughter. He immediately sent a local contact in Aligarh to intervene. This person alerted AMU officials and security guards upon reaching the campus.
Desperate Rescue Attempt Fails
University security personnel and officials rushed to the student's hostel room in SN Hall. They broke into the room but found her in critical condition. The final-year computer science engineering student was quickly taken to JN Medical College.
Doctors attempted to save her life for approximately three hours. Despite their efforts, she passed away around 10:30 PM. The young woman hailed from Azamgarh and was pursuing a diploma in computer science engineering.
AMU Proctor Mohammad Waseem Ali confirmed the incident on Tuesday. He described the student as bright and noted that her father works abroad. No suicide note was discovered in the room, which authorities have now sealed.
Investigation Points to Family Dispute
Civil Lines Station House Officer Vinod Kumar provided preliminary findings. He stated that investigation points toward a family dispute as a possible factor. The police handed over the body to her family after completing the postmortem examination.
No formal police complaint has been filed at this time. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances that led to this tragic event. An official inquiry is currently underway at the university level as well.
Second AMU Suicide in Three Months
This marks the second suicide case at Aligarh Muslim University within three months. On October 25, an 18-year-old BA Political Science student was found hanging in her hostel room at Women's College.
That student came from Agwanpur in Moradabad's Civil Lines area. She resided in Mumtaz Hostel at the time of her death. Both incidents have raised concerns about student mental health support systems at educational institutions.
The recent tragedy highlights the urgent need for better counseling services and intervention mechanisms. University communities across India are grappling with similar challenges as academic pressures mount on young students.
