Abu Dhabi Launches Global Scholarships for Emirati Students in Social Work and Psychology
Abu Dhabi has introduced an international scholarship program specifically designed for Emirati students pursuing studies in social work and psychology. This initiative aims to tackle a growing shortage of qualified professionals within the social care sector across the emirate.
Partnership and Program Details
The program has been launched by the Department of Community Development in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge. It will provide comprehensive support for students enrolling in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at leading international universities.
This strategic move comes in response to increasing demand for social care services, which continues to outpace the availability of specialized national professionals. Despite a rise in service providers, a significant gap persists between workforce supply and the sector's evolving needs.
Scholarship Coverage and Structure
The scholarships will fully cover tuition for bachelor's degrees in social work and psychology, as well as master's programs in specialized areas such as family counseling, counseling psychology, and psychotherapy. One study pathway will commence as a pilot project this year, with the inaugural group of master's students expected to begin their studies in 2026.
Beyond tuition, the program includes extensive training opportunities, personalized mentoring, and dedicated career guidance. The objective is to ensure graduates are thoroughly prepared to enter licensed roles within the social care sector upon completion of their studies.
Target Audience and Career Development
Primarily targeting secondary school students and recent graduates, the initiative focuses on encouraging more Emiratis to consider long-term careers in social care. The program is meticulously designed to align with regulatory requirements, preparing students for professional practice in compliance with industry standards.
Broader Context and National Strategy
This scholarship program is part of wider efforts by the United Arab Emirates to strengthen its social development system. In December 2024, the UAE established a Ministry of Family, implementing a strategic framework from 2025 to 2027 focused on supporting families and vulnerable groups.
The launch coincides with a notable surge in higher education interest across the country. During the 2024–2025 academic year, 57,035 new students enrolled in UAE higher education institutions, representing a 13 percent increase and the highest intake in a decade, according to a Khaleej Times report. Emirati student enrollment in Dubai alone rose by 22 percent during this period.
Long-Term Objectives
Officials emphasize that the scholarship program aims to build a locally trained workforce capable of supporting families and communities effectively. By positioning social care as a viable and rewarding long-term career option for Emirati youth, the initiative seeks to foster sustainable development in the sector.
