Abu Dhabi Implements Stricter Distance Learning Framework for Schools
The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has rolled out a significantly stricter set of distance learning regulations across the emirate. This comprehensive update makes live online classes and mandatory attendance tracking compulsory for all educational institutions, marking a decisive shift towards formalizing remote education.
Mandatory Live Classes and Attendance Tracking
Under the newly introduced framework, student attendance during online sessions is no longer flexible and must be formally recorded with the same rigor as physical classroom attendance. This move is designed to ensure that distance learning receives the same level of seriousness and commitment as traditional in-person teaching, thereby reducing instances of passive or irregular student participation.
Schools are now mandated to:
- Track and record attendance for every scheduled online class session.
- Ensure students are not only present but also actively participating in the lessons.
- Follow up with students who are absent and maintain proper, detailed records of attendance.
Concurrently, students are expected to:
- Log in punctually for all scheduled online classes.
- Keep their cameras turned on where and when it is required by the school.
- Actively engage with teachers during the live instructional sessions.
Prioritizing Interactive Live Instruction
A cornerstone of the updated ADEK rules is the explicit requirement for live, real-time teaching to serve as the primary mode of instruction. Schools have been directed to prioritize interactive live classes where students can engage directly with educators, ask questions in real-time, and receive immediate feedback. This pedagogical approach aims to enhance student understanding and maintain active involvement throughout the learning process.
While recorded lessons are still permitted under the new framework, they are strictly designated as supplementary material. These recordings cannot replace live teaching sessions, representing a clear and intentional departure from the more passive learning methods that were sometimes employed during earlier phases of remote education.
Enhanced Accountability for Schools and Teachers
The new regulatory framework places stronger accountability on both schools and teachers to guarantee the delivery of high-quality online education. Educational institutions must implement well-structured daily schedules, continuously monitor lesson delivery, and ensure that teaching remains interactive, engaging, and pedagogically effective.
Teachers, in turn, are expected to conduct compelling and interactive sessions, regularly assess student progress through various means, and provide continuous, constructive feedback to support learning. ADEK has also emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced digital learning environment. This includes prudent management of student screen time and providing adequate support for overall student wellbeing, recognizing the unique challenges of prolonged online engagement.
Aligning with Abu Dhabi's Digital Education Strategy
These tighter regulations are not isolated measures but reflect Abu Dhabi's broader, strategic push to establish a robust, long-term, and structured digital education model. The move signals a deliberate shift away from relying on temporary or ad-hoc remote learning solutions toward a more disciplined and regulated ecosystem for online schooling.
According to ADEK, the overarching goals of the updated rules are to measurably improve learning outcomes, significantly strengthen student participation and discipline, and ensure that distance education consistently meets the same high standards as traditional classroom teaching. The framework establishes clear expectations and responsibilities for students, educators, and school administrations alike, setting a new benchmark for digital education in the region.
