UPSC Prelims 2026 Held Amid Tight Security

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducted the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 on Sunday across multiple centers in the country. The exam was held under stringent security arrangements to ensure a fair and transparent process.

Security Measures

Authorities deployed extensive security protocols, including frisking of candidates, use of metal detectors, and CCTV surveillance at all exam centers. Mobile phones and other electronic devices were strictly prohibited inside the examination halls. The UPSC also deployed flying squads to conduct surprise checks at various centers.

Candidate Turnout

Over 10 lakh candidates had registered for the preliminary exam, which serves as the first stage for recruitment to various central government services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The exam was conducted in two shifts: the General Studies paper in the morning and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) in the afternoon.

Previous Incidents

The strict security comes in the wake of recent controversies surrounding paper leaks and malpractices in other competitive exams. The UPSC has been under pressure to maintain the integrity of the examination process. In 2024, the commission had introduced biometric verification and increased the number of observers to curb cheating.

Exam Pattern

The preliminary exam comprises two objective-type papers: Paper I (General Studies) covering current events, history, geography, polity, economy, and environment; and Paper II (CSAT) testing comprehension, logical reasoning, and quantitative aptitude. Both papers carry 200 marks each, and the marks of CSAT are only qualifying in nature.

Next Steps

Candidates who clear the prelims will be eligible for the Main Examination scheduled later this year. The results for the preliminary exam are expected to be announced within four to six weeks. Successful candidates will then appear for the Mains, followed by a personality test (interview).

The UPSC has advised candidates to check the official website for updates and to download their admit cards for the next stage. The commission also urged candidates to refrain from believing any rumors about the exam and to rely only on official notifications.
