NEET UG 2026 Cut-Off Trends: Marks vs Rank Analysis

Millions of aspirants appeared for the NEET UG 2025 examination on May 3, aiming for admission to medical colleges across India. With a limited number of MBBS seats available, even a marginal difference in marks can drastically alter a student’s rank and admission prospects.

Understanding Safe Scores in NEET UG

The National Testing Agency (NTA) does not officially define a 'safe score' for NEET UG. Instead, it is derived from historical admission trends and counselling data. The concept of a safe score is dynamic and changes annually based on several factors, including exam difficulty, the number of test-takers, overall student performance, and seat availability in counselling rounds. An easier paper tends to raise cut-offs, while a tougher one may lower them slightly. However, competition remains intense due to the sheer volume of candidates.

NEET UG 2026 Expected Cut-Off: Past Year Trends

Over the past three years, NEET UG cut-offs have shown slight variations. For the Unreserved/EWS category, the range shifted from 720–137 in 2023 to 686–144 in 2025 for government colleges, reflecting changes in exam difficulty and competition levels. Reserved categories such as OBC, SC, and ST have maintained relatively stable trends within similar qualifying bands across years.

NEET UG 2026: Marks vs Rank

NEET UG is highly competitive because even a 10–15 mark difference can push a student significantly down the rank list. Thousands of candidates often cluster within a narrow marks band. For instance, a difference of just 10–15 marks may not appear large, but it can separate students by several thousand ranks. Consequently, a student scoring 620 marks and another scoring 635 marks may not only differ slightly in performance but also land in completely different counselling brackets.

NEET UG scores are accepted for admission to courses including MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, BSMS, and BVSc & AH.
