PU Admissions Surge in Mangaluru: Science, Commerce Top

Admissions to Pre-University (PU) courses in Mangaluru have commenced following the announcement of Class 10 results for SSLC, ICSE, and CBSE boards. Colleges across the city report a notable rise in applications, particularly for science and commerce streams.

High Demand for Science and Commerce

As in previous years, combinations featuring computer science in both science and commerce streams remain the most sought-after. Science continues to attract the highest number of applicants, followed closely by commerce, while humanities sees the least demand. Private and aided colleges have experienced heavy footfall, especially for science courses, which are popular among students aspiring to careers in medicine, engineering, and other professional fields.

Admission Trends in Private and Aided Colleges

A spokesperson from one of the city's oldest PU colleges stated that admissions are nearly complete, with applications surpassing those of previous years. The college conducted online interviews for students residing abroad or unable to attend in person. All streams, including humanities, have already reached full capacity. Other unaided colleges reported similar trends, although humanities continues to see lower demand. At Vidvath PU College in Belthangady, the PCMC (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science) combination is the most preferred, followed by PCMB (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology). Commerce has also seen steady demand, driven by students aiming for careers in business, finance, and management.

Government Colleges Yet to See Surge

Government PU colleges in the district have not yet experienced a similar response. Jayanand Suvarna, principal of Government PU College in Shakti Nagar, reported that only 10 to 12 applications have been received so far, with a similar trend observed across other government institutions. He noted that many students take up part-time jobs after the SSLC exams and seek admission after June, even though colleges are set to reopen on May 25.

Early Admissions in Unaided Colleges

Unaided PU colleges begin tentative admissions early in the academic year, reserving seats based on past academic performance. These provisional admissions are confirmed after the board results are announced.
