A 19-year-old NEET aspirant died by suicide in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, just days before the national retest scheduled for June 23. The incident has raised concerns about the mental health of students preparing for competitive exams.
Incident Details
The student, identified as Rohan Patel, was found hanging in his room in the Naranpura area of Ahmedabad. He was a resident of the city and had been preparing for the NEET exam for the past two years. According to police, no suicide note was found at the scene.
Family Statement
Patel's father, a private employee, stated that his son was under immense pressure due to the upcoming retest. The family had no prior indication of any distress. They have lodged a complaint, and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
Investigation
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances. Initial inquiries suggest that exam stress may have been a contributing factor. Authorities are also probing if there was any foul play.
Reactions
The incident has sparked a debate on the mental health support system for students. Education experts have called for counseling services and stress management programs in coaching centers. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has not yet commented on the matter.
This tragic event adds to the growing list of student suicides linked to exam pressure in India. In 2025, over 50 such cases were reported nationwide during the exam season.
