The year 2025 has been etched as a transformative period for the Western Railway (WR) zone, marked by unprecedented progress across its operations. From achieving complete electrification to setting new benchmarks in punctuality and passenger safety, the zone has solidified its position as a frontrunner in India's railway modernization journey.
A Green and Punctual Network
One of the most significant accomplishments was the complete electrification of Western Railway's Broad Gauge network. Chief Spokesperson Vineet Abhishek, while releasing the year-ender report, highlighted this as a cornerstone for sustainable and energy-efficient operations. This milestone directly supports national environmental goals and cements WR's role in promoting green transportation.
Parallelly, the zone demonstrated exceptional operational excellence by maintaining an impressive 97% punctuality rate for its Mail and Express services. This feat, accomplished despite various operational challenges, underscores the effectiveness of WR's robust planning and advanced real-time monitoring systems, setting a new efficiency standard for the sector.
Digital Dominance and Safety Infrastructure
Western Railway's digital transformation reached a new peak with the achievement of 100% digital ticket checking. This was made possible by deploying 2,270 hand-held terminals (HHTs) across its network. Furthermore, the zone retained its number one position in Rail Madad grievance redressal for the fifth consecutive year, showcasing its commitment to passenger-centric digital services.
Safety and connectivity received a massive boost through substantial infrastructure work. Key initiatives included:
- Construction of 138 Road Over Bridges and Under Bridges.
- Elimination of 114 manned level crossings to reduce accidents.
- Installation of 660 km of W-beam fencing to prevent trespassing.
These measures have significantly enhanced both passenger safety and the overall efficiency of train operations.
Heritage, Heroism, and High-Tech Manufacturing
The zone also balanced modernization with cultural preservation. Initiatives like the Bandra Station Mahotsav celebrated the architectural legacy and rich heritage of the iconic suburban station, fostering public engagement.
WR's commitment to protecting lives was heroically displayed by its Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. Their courageous efforts led to 37 lives saved under Operation Jeevan Raksha and the rescue of 769 runaway or missing children under Operation Nanhe Farishtey.
A monumental infrastructure project, the Loco Manufacturing Shop at Dahod (worth Rs 21,405 crore), was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This state-of-the-art facility is poised to manufacture 9,000 HP electric freight locomotives, boosting India's freight capacity and aligning perfectly with the "Make in India" mission.
The year also saw the completion of 234 km of new lines, doubling, and gauge conversion projects, enhancing network capacity. A major technological leap was the commissioning of India's first 2×25 kV traction system on the Khachrod–Nagda section, enabling higher speeds and superior energy efficiency for trains.
In summary, Western Railway's 2025 was a year of holistic growth, seamlessly integrating sustainability, digital innovation, safety, heritage, and cutting-edge infrastructure to drive the future of rail transport in India.
