Information Technology Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan declared on Friday that the coming decade could present a period of exceptional opportunity for south India, with Tamil Nadu positioned as a particular beneficiary, despite ongoing global economic disruptions. He emphasized that this potential can be realized if governments work closely with independent institutions and experts who bring global experience, deep research capabilities, and innovative perspectives to the table.
Turning Disruption into Opportunity
Speaking at the launch of the Deccan Centre for International Relations in Chennai, Minister Thiagarajan provided a compelling perspective on economic challenges. "No economic disruption is universally negative," he stated. "For some, it becomes an opportunity — a transformative one at that." He illustrated this point by highlighting the remarkable 700% surge in electronics exports from Tamil Nadu over the past three years following the pandemic, describing this achievement as "a clear example of the scale of opportunity created by global economic realignments."

The minister presented Tamil Nadu's impressive double-digit GDP growth of 11.19% in 2025 as a significant indicator, but cautioned against viewing it as a peak performance. Thiagarajan elaborated on the broader advantages of southern states, noting they are disproportionately ahead of their population share across multiple critical metrics.

T S Tirumurti, chairperson of the Deccan Centre's steering committee, outlined the institution's mission and focus areas. The center, established under the Institute for Financial Management and Research, will concentrate on three interconnected domains:
