Shivamogga MP Announces Major Railway Expansion for Malnad Region

Shivamogga MP B Y Raghavendra made a significant announcement on Friday. He confirmed that the Union government has sanctioned funds for primary surveys of several new railway lines. This development marks a crucial step in enhancing rail connectivity across the region.

High-Priority Shivamogga-Sringeri Route Takes Center Stage

The MP highlighted a high-priority project during his press briefing. The proposed railway line will connect Shivamogga to Sringeri via Thirthahalli. Raghavendra explained that this line forms part of a larger strategic vision. It aims to link the Malnad region with the coastal area effectively.

This connection could revolutionize tourism and local commerce in the area. The MP noted that the economic feasibility of these routes will become clear once survey reports are submitted. The government will then make informed decisions based on the findings.

Multiple Corridors Under Consideration for Survey

The initiative includes surveys for four to five distinct corridors. These proposed lines aim to provide comprehensive railway access to several Malnad taluks. One corridor will link Chikkajajur to Bhadravathi. Another proposed line connects Shikaripura to Ranebennur.

A significant 165-kilometer line from Talaguppa to Hubballi via Sirsi is also under consideration. Authorities expect the Detailed Project Report for this line by June 2026. These new lines promise to create faster transit paths for agricultural products. They will facilitate smoother movement between coastal Karnataka and northern Karnataka.

Koteganguru Railway Terminal Progress and Future Plans

Central to these railway developments is the construction of the Koteganguru Railway Terminal near Shivamogga. Raghavendra reported that this project is approximately sixty percent complete. The terminal will serve as a secondary hub to decongest the existing Shivamogga Town station.

Once inaugurated, likely by mid-2026, it will facilitate more frequent trains to major cities. The BJP MP addressed public demand for a Vande Bharat Express between Shivamogga and Bengaluru. He clarified that this service requires specialized maintenance and pit-line facilities. These facilities are currently being built at the Koteganguru site.

Complementary Urban Projects to Support Rail Expansion

Complementing the rail expansion, several urban projects are moving forward. A new flyover near Freedom Park is in the works. Track doubling from Birur to Shivamogga is also progressing. These projects aim to handle the anticipated increase in traffic resulting from improved rail connectivity.

Raghavendra emphasized that these combined efforts will significantly boost regional development. They promise to enhance transportation efficiency and economic opportunities across Malnad and surrounding areas.
