Ahmedabad's Shahibaug Underpass Faces Five-Day Closure for Bullet Train Construction
The Shahibaug three-way underpass in Ahmedabad will shut down completely for five days. This closure starts at 8 pm on January 23 and lasts through January 28. Authorities cite ongoing bullet train construction work as the reason for this major traffic disruption.
Construction Work Details
Contractors will install horizontal segments on pillars for the High-Speed Rail project. They will also conduct piloting work between the Sabarmati and Vatva sections. This critical infrastructure activity requires the full closure of the underpass to ensure safety and efficiency.
Revised Closure Schedule
Originally, officials planned to close the underpass from January 5 to January 12. They issued a notification about this closure on December 30, 2025. However, work delays forced authorities to withdraw that notification on January 5, 2026. The new schedule now runs from January 23 to January 28.
Traffic Diversion Plans
The Ahmedabad City Traffic Police issued a fresh traffic diversion notification on January 19. They have established alternative routes to minimize inconvenience for commuters.
For vehicles heading from Delhi Darwaza and Subhash Bridge toward the airport or Gandhinagar:
- Access the riverfront road from Shilalekh flat
- Proceed toward Daffnala
For traffic coming from the airport or Gandhinagar:
- Use the riverfront road to reach Asarwa, Girdharnagar, Delhi Darwaza, and Kalupur
For vehicles originating from Girdharnagar and Asarwa:
- Head toward Gayatri Mandir
- Pass the army cantonment and airport circle to reach the airport
- Alternatively, take Indira Bridge to proceed toward Gandhinagar
Commuters should plan their journeys carefully during this period. The traffic police advise using these alternative routes to avoid congestion and delays.
