Rourkela: In a brazen attack on law enforcement, members of a sand mining mafia allegedly assaulted mining officials and police personnel during a raid on illegal sand transportation at Amalipali sand ghat in Sundargarh district on Wednesday. One mining official and two police officers sustained injuries in the incident.
Details of the Raid
A team led by Akashaya Kalo, junior mining officer of Sundargarh, along with police personnel from Town police station, conducted a raid at Amalipali sand ghat on Wednesday morning following a tip-off about illegal sand extraction and transportation. During the operation, the team seized six vehicles loaded with illegally mined sand.
Attack and Vehicle Theft
While the seized vehicles were being taken to the police station, members of the sand mining mafia allegedly assaulted the enforcement team and forcibly took away five of the six vehicles. The attack left one mining official and two police officers injured.
Police Response
Following the incident, Kalo lodged a complaint at Town police station. A case was registered and an investigation launched. Four police teams have been formed to identify the attackers and apprehend them. Nirmal Mohapatra, SDPO of Sadar, Sundargarh, confirmed, "Based on the complaint of the junior mining officer, four police teams have been formed to identify the attackers and arrest them."
The authorities are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and curb illegal sand mining in the region.
