Pantnagar Airport's Rs 387 Crore Expansion Takes Off, To Boost Kumaon Air Links
Pantnagar Airport Rs 387 Crore Expansion Work Begins

In a significant boost to regional air connectivity, construction work has officially commenced on the ambitious Rs 387 crore expansion project of Pantnagar Airport in Uttarakhand. This major upgrade is set to transform the airport into a key aviation hub for the Kumaon region, enabling the operation of larger aircraft like Boeing and Airbus models.

Project Launch and Initial Phase

The development has kicked off with the construction of a boundary wall on 524 acres of newly acquired land, marking the physical start of this transformative initiative. Airport Director Pawan Kumar confirmed the commencement, outlining the project's broad scope aimed at modernizing the airport's infrastructure to meet growing demand and improve accessibility to the Himalayan state.

Key Features of the Expansion

The core of the expansion involves two critical components: a runway extension and a brand-new terminal building. The existing runway will be extended and upgraded to Code-E standards, which is the specification required to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A330. This enhanced runway will also support night operations and will be fitted with state-of-the-art navigation and lighting systems for all-weather reliability.

Complementing the runway will be a modern, spacious terminal spanning 8,500 square metres. Designed to handle up to 475 passengers during peak hours and over 10 lakh (1 million) passengers annually, the terminal promises a seamless travel experience. Passenger amenities will include:

  • Two advanced boarding bridges for direct aircraft access.
  • Lifts and escalators for easy movement.
  • A modern, automated baggage handling system.
  • Expanded cargo facilities to boost local trade.
  • Self check-in kiosks for faster processing.

Sustainability and Safety at the Forefront

Aligning with global environmental standards, the project will adhere to the GRIHA-4 green building rating. Sustainable features will include the integration of renewable energy sources, upgraded parking areas, and significantly enhanced fire safety facilities. This focus ensures the development is not only growth-oriented but also responsible and future-ready.

The expansion of Pantnagar Airport is poised to be a game-changer for Uttarakhand's Kumaon region. By enabling direct flights on larger aircraft, it will improve tourism inflow, facilitate better business connectivity, and provide locals with more travel options. The enhanced cargo infrastructure will also support the region's horticulture and other industries, potentially boosting the local economy. This project marks a crucial step in bridging the connectivity gap for the state and integrating it more firmly with national and international air networks.
