The Meghalaya Aroma Mission has taken a significant step toward transforming rural economies with the inauguration of a new Field Distillation Unit in Phlangwanbroi village. This initiative promises to enhance farmer incomes through the cultivation and processing of aromatic herbs.
Community Celebration Marks Historic Inauguration
Farmers from Phlangwanbroi and surrounding villages gathered enthusiastically for the inauguration ceremony at Mawsynram Block. Local legislator Olan Singh Suin unveiled the commemorative plaque, highlighting the collaborative effort between the Farmers Malai Sohmat Protection Group, Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), and CSIR–IHBT Aroma Mission from Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.
The event showcased strong community engagement, with traditional dance performances by Phlangwanbroi's youth adding cultural significance to the occasion. Following the formal proceedings, guests received a practical demonstration of the distillation process and toured the new facility.
Unlocking Agricultural Potential Through Value Addition
Legislator Olan Singh Suin emphasized the strategic importance of adding value to agricultural products. This is the first distillation unit in the Mawsynram constituency, representing a milestone in local agricultural development.
Suin specifically highlighted the potential of lemongrass, which grows abundantly throughout the region. He encouraged farmers to explore additional opportunities in bay leaf and patchouli cultivation, noting that value addition through processing would lead to better market returns and economic sustainability.
Building Sustainable Futures for Farming Communities
Officials provided comprehensive training to farmer-producer groups, covering operation protocols, quality assurance measures, and market-linkage opportunities. This knowledge transfer ensures local communities can effectively operate and benefit from the new facility.
The legislator expressed optimism that the distillation unit would not only boost agricultural productivity but also attract visitors to the region, contributing to overall economic growth. The project represents a concrete step toward ensuring a prosperous future for Meghalaya's farming communities through sustainable agricultural practices and value-added processing.
