Meghalaya Hosts Pioneering Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet 2026 in Shillong

The Meghalaya government's Department of Commerce and Industries, in partnership with the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, successfully organized the Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet 2026 at the state convention centre in Shillong on Tuesday. This landmark event was conducted under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) Scheme of the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, marking a significant step towards enhancing export capabilities for local businesses.

International Participation and MSME Engagement

The meet has attracted substantial global interest, with participation from 28 international buyers representing 16 diverse countries. These include nations from various continents such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Slovakia, Turkiye, Nepal, New Zealand, Russia, Bahrain, Kenya, Australia, Uganda, Gambia, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, Canada, and Romania. On the domestic front, over 100 MSME sellers from across Meghalaya are actively participating, showcasing a wide range of products and services to potential international partners.

CM Conrad K Sangma Inaugurates Historic Event

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the meet, highlighting its unprecedented nature. He emphasized that this is the first event of its kind not only for Meghalaya but for the entire northeast region of India. Sangma reflected on the state's journey, recalling the Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Programme supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Initially recommended for closure due to poor performance, this programme has since been globally recognized as one of IFAD's best projects, demonstrating the state's resilience and growth.

"Nothing changes overnight," Sangma stated, underscoring that transformation requires unwavering commitment, focused efforts, and a clear vision. Regarding global trade dynamics, he noted that while uncertainty exists, it also presents unique opportunities, particularly in sectors like textiles, where Meghalaya can leverage its strengths.

Objectives and Impact

The primary aim of this initiative is to strengthen export opportunities and improve global market access for MSMEs from Meghalaya. By facilitating direct interactions between local sellers and international buyers, the event seeks to:

  • Foster new business partnerships and trade agreements.
  • Enhance the competitiveness of Meghalaya's MSMEs on the global stage.
  • Promote economic growth and job creation within the state.
  • Showcase the diverse products and entrepreneurial spirit of the region.

This meet represents a strategic move under the RAMP Scheme to accelerate MSME performance, aligning with broader national goals of boosting exports and supporting small businesses. The collaboration between state and federal agencies, along with industry bodies, highlights a concerted effort to drive sustainable development in Meghalaya's economy.
