Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has proposed a sister city partnership with Peru, aiming to elevate bilateral trade between the Indian state and the South American nation to $10 billion. The announcement was made on 29 June 2026, during a diplomatic engagement in Bengaluru.
Shared Values and Economic Goals
Parameshwara highlighted the shared values of democracy, resilience, and inclusive development that continue to shape relations between Karnataka and Peru. He emphasized that the proposed partnership would leverage these commonalities to foster deeper economic cooperation. The Deputy CM noted that Peru, with its growing economy and strategic location in Latin America, offers significant opportunities for trade and investment.
Trade Targets and Sectors
The $10 billion trade target represents a substantial increase from current levels. Key sectors identified for collaboration include agriculture, mining, technology, and infrastructure. Karnataka, known for its IT hub in Bengaluru and strong agricultural base, could export software services, machinery, and processed foods to Peru. In return, Peru could supply minerals, coffee, and textiles. Parameshwara urged business leaders from both regions to explore joint ventures and trade delegations.
Diplomatic Context
The proposal comes amid India's broader efforts to strengthen ties with Latin America. Peru has been a reliable partner in multilateral forums, and Karnataka's initiative aligns with India's Act East and Link West policies. The sister city agreement would likely be formalized through a memorandum of understanding, with specific cities to be identified later.
Impact on Karnataka
For Karnataka, the partnership could boost exports, attract Peruvian investment, and enhance cultural exchange. The state government plans to set up a dedicated trade facilitation cell to support businesses. Parameshwara also called for direct air connectivity between Bengaluru and Lima to ease travel and logistics.
