India is set to implement two to three free trade agreements (FTAs) within the next six months, with an additional three to four more expected to be concluded in 2027, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Progress on FTAs
Speaking at a press conference, Goyal highlighted that in the last three-and-a-half years, India has already finalised nine FTAs. These agreements are part of the government's strategy to boost exports and integrate the Indian economy more deeply with global supply chains.
Strategic Trade Expansion
The minister emphasised that the new FTAs will cover key regions and sectors, aiming to provide Indian businesses with preferential market access. He noted that the agreements are being negotiated with a focus on balanced outcomes that benefit both domestic industries and consumers.
Goyal also stated that the government is working on streamlining trade procedures and reducing non-tariff barriers to complement the FTA strategy. The upcoming agreements are expected to cover goods, services, and investment, following the model of recent pacts with nations like the United Arab Emirates and Australia.

Economists have welcomed the announcement, noting that FTAs can help India diversify its trade partners and reduce dependence on any single market. However, they caution that effective implementation and domestic reforms will be crucial to realise the full benefits.
