India's peak power demand soared to a record high of 252 gigawatts (GW) on Friday, driven by intense heatwave conditions across several regions. The previous record of 243 GW was set in September 2023. The surge in demand underscores the growing strain on the country's power infrastructure as summer temperatures rise.
Record-Breaking Demand
The Ministry of Power confirmed that the peak demand reached 252 GW on May 20, 2023, exceeding the earlier estimate of 250 GW. This milestone highlights the increasing electricity consumption due to higher usage of cooling appliances like air conditioners and fans. The ministry had earlier projected a peak demand of 229 GW for May, but actual figures surpassed expectations.
Regional Impact
Northern and western states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, experienced the highest demand. Delhi alone recorded a peak demand of over 8,000 MW. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that temperatures in many parts of the country crossed 45 degrees Celsius, with some areas nearing 47 degrees Celsius.
Government Response
The government has taken steps to manage the increased demand, including ensuring adequate coal stocks for thermal power plants. The Ministry of Power has directed all states to maintain sufficient power supply and avoid outages. The National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) is monitoring the situation closely.
Challenges Ahead
Experts warn that demand could further rise if the heatwave persists. The power sector faces challenges such as coal shortages and transmission constraints. However, renewable energy sources like solar power have helped partially meet the demand during daytime. The government is also promoting energy efficiency measures to reduce consumption.
This record demand underscores the need for robust power infrastructure and diversified energy sources to ensure reliable supply amid changing climate patterns. As India continues to urbanize and industrialize, power demand is expected to grow, making grid management and capacity addition critical priorities.
