For the remaining months of the year, the Chief Minister proposed a significant increase in import duty. He suggested raising it to 100% to discourage off-season imports. This measure would help maintain stable prices throughout the year.
Why Apples Matter to Himachal Pradesh
Sukhu emphasized the enormous economic importance of apples for the state. This fruit accounts for a staggering 80% of Himachal's total fruit production. The industry generates an annual income of approximately Rs 4,500 crore. It supports the livelihoods of around 2.5 lakh farmers across the region.

The meeting followed growing concerns raised by state horticulturists just last week. Sukhu presented their grievances directly to the Union Minister. He requested swift action to address the challenges facing apple growers.

Free trade agreements could accelerate this growth further. The Chief Minister expressed particular concern about current tariff structures. New Zealand apples enter India with only a 25% duty during the April-August period. A 50% duty applies during other months.
