The fisheries sector of Gujarat is preparing to make a significant splash at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Summit (VGRC), scheduled to be held in Rajkot in the second week of January 2026. The event will specifically highlight the marine prowess of the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, which form the backbone of the state's aquatic output.
Saurashtra and Kutch: The Twin Engines of Marine Production
These two coastal regions are undeniably the powerhouses of Gujarat's fisheries industry. Together, Saurashtra and Kutch account for nearly 80% of the state's annual fish production. Official data reveals that the eight coastal districts of Saurashtra alone contribute over 70% to Gujarat's total output. Kutch, the state's largest district geographically, adds another 9% to the tally.
In the 2024-25 period, Gujarat's total marine production stood at 7,64,343 metric tonnes. Of this, Saurashtra's contribution was a massive 5,42,333 metric tonnes, while Kutch produced 67,547 metric tonnes. Over the past four years, Gujarat has maintained an average annual marine fish production of approximately 9.30 lakh metric tonnes, securing its position as the second-largest marine fish producer in India.
Ambitious Targets for the Blue Economy
Looking ahead, the state government has set an ambitious production target for the 2025-26 financial year. Gujarat aims to achieve a total fish production of 11,71,353 metric tonnes. This goal comprises 8,40,069 metric tonnes from marine sources and 3,31,284 metric tonnes from inland fisheries, aquaculture, and related activities.
The summit in Rajkot is designed to be more than just a showcase of current achievements. According to an official statement, "The conference will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, technology experts, and stakeholders to discuss new avenues for innovation, sustainability, and value addition for the industry." The event is expected to reaffirm the state's commitment to coastal development and the conservation of vital marine ecosystems.
A National Giant in a Global Arena
Gujarat's push in the fisheries sector aligns with India's prominent position in global fish production. India is currently the world's second-largest fish producer, holding an 8% share of the global output. The fisheries sector in the country is a vast ecosystem that supports nearly 30 million people. It encompasses:
- Inland and marine fishing
- Aquaculture
- Seafood processing and exports
- Marketing, research, and education
The Vibrant Gujarat Regional Summit in Rajkot will therefore serve as a critical platform to anchor the state more firmly within this growing blue economy. It will spotlight the scale of existing operations and the immense investment and growth opportunities that lie offshore, aiming to attract innovation and sustainable practices to propel the industry forward.
