Etihad Airways Tops Global Safety Rankings for 2026
Aviation safety website Airlineratings.com has released its annual list of the world's safest airlines for 2026. The rankings place Etihad Airways at the very top, marking the first time a Gulf carrier has achieved this position.
Asian Airlines Claim Strong Presence in Top Ten
Four Asian carriers secured spots in the prestigious top ten list. Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong took second place, while Singapore Airlines returned to the top ten at seventh position after missing last year's ranking. EVA Air from Taiwan ranked eighth, and Korean Air from South Korea completed the Asian representation at tenth place.
The comprehensive assessment evaluated 320 airlines worldwide. It identified the top 25 safest full-service carriers and the top 25 safest low-cost airlines. Etihad's achievement represents a significant milestone for Middle Eastern aviation.
Notable Ranking Shifts and Close Competition
Several airlines experienced substantial position changes from last year's rankings. Air New Zealand, which led as the world's safest airline in 2025, dropped five spots to sixth place for 2026. Japan's ANA (All Nippon Airways) fell from eighth to fourteenth position, exiting the top ten entirely.
Qatar Airways and Emirates secured fourth and fifth positions respectively, giving the Middle East three carriers in the top five. Australian airlines performed strongly with Qantas taking third place and Virgin Australia ranking ninth.
Sharon Petersen, CEO of Airlineratings.com, highlighted the exceptionally close competition among top airlines. "Less than four points covered positions one through fourteen," Petersen noted. "At the very top, the margins were even tighter, with just 1.3 points separating positions one through six in the full-service category."
Safety Assessment Methodology
The rankings employed consistent criteria year after year. Key factors included incident rates adjusted for total flight numbers, fleet age analysis, serious incident records, pilot training standards, and international safety audit results.
Petersen emphasized that all airlines in the Top 25 represent world leaders in aviation safety. "Claims that one airline is significantly safer or less safe than another are both sensationalist and false," she stated on the website.
Global Aviation Context and Indian Absence
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects global air traffic will surge in 2026. Passenger numbers are expected to reach 5.2 billion, reflecting strong post-pandemic growth across the aviation industry.
This year's safety rankings gain particular significance following several high-profile air accidents reported globally last year. The aviation industry has renewed its emphasis on safety standards as passenger volumes continue to recover.
Notably, no Indian airline made it to the top ten safest airlines list for 2026. This absence comes despite India's growing aviation market and increasing international connectivity.
