Deendayal Port, located in Kandla, Gujarat, is poised to handle a significant influx of maritime traffic, with 22 vessels scheduled to arrive over the next 72 hours. This surge includes several foreign-flagged ships originally bound for Gulf countries, which are now rerouting due to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East region, such as the Israel-Iran tensions.
Port Authority Prepares for Rerouted Voyages
The port authority has confirmed that it is making extensive preparations to accommodate these vessels, many of which are undergoing a "change of voyage". This term refers to the intentional and voluntary alteration of a ship's originally planned route or final destination after the journey has commenced. In a social media update on Friday, the authority stated, "Going to handle 22 vessels in the next 72 hours. Deendayal port authority, Kandla gears up to handle the surge in incoming vessels... Systems working efficiently to accommodate reconfigured voyages."
Officials involved in the logistics have highlighted the port's strategic advantages, including its prime location and the availability of extensive land parcels. These assets are being leveraged to create ample space for storing consignments, ensuring smooth operations during this period of heightened activity.
Government Directives and Stable Operations Across India
This development follows recent directives from the shipping secretary, who instructed all government-owned ports to enhance their readiness and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to address challenges faced by shipping lines, agents, and exporters. Special Secretary in the Shipping Ministry, Rajesh Sinha, emphasized that port operations throughout India remain stable, with SOPs issued for both major and non-major ports to ensure efficiency and safety.
The port's role as a transhipment hub is particularly crucial now, as ships destined for West Asian countries can utilize Kandla to drop off cargo, avoiding the conflict-affected areas. This move not only supports global trade continuity but also underscores India's growing importance in international maritime logistics amid geopolitical uncertainties.
