Mangaluru: Chowgule Shipyards delivered the Frisian Future, a diesel-electric, wind-assisted general cargo vessel, on Monday following a successful sea trial. This marks the first vessel built at its Mangaluru facility for Boomsma Shipping of the Netherlands.

The Frisian Future represents the future of the global shipping fleet, delivering roughly 30% lower emissions than conventional equivalents. Its diesel-electric arrangement provides operational flexibility and improved efficiency across varying load conditions. European operators are increasingly specifying vessels of this type in response to tightening emission regulations under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union frameworks.
Technical Specifications and Compliance
An 8,500 DWT foreign-going general cargo vessel, the Frisian Future sails under the Netherlands flag. This ICE class 1B vessel is classed with Lloyd's Register and complies with SOLAS, MARPOL, and IMO Tier III requirements. The vessel incorporates a forward accommodation arrangement, optimizing deck and hold geometry to maximize usable cargo volume, thereby enhancing efficiency in the carriage of project cargoes. It was built in Mangaluru under the 'Make in India' initiative.
