In a significant move to strengthen rail links between southern and eastern India, Bengaluru is set to receive three new long-distance train services connecting it to West Bengal. This development is poised to offer substantial relief to migrant workers, business traders, and families who frequently travel on this crucial corridor.
Amrit Bharat Express Takes Center Stage
Among the trio of new services, the flagship addition is an Amrit Bharat Express that will link Bengaluru with Alipurduar in northern West Bengal. This marks the second Amrit Bharat train service from Bengaluru to West Bengal, following the existing route to Malda, underscoring Indian Railways' focus on enhancing modern, non-air-conditioned long-distance travel options.
As per the official timetable released by the Railway Board, this Amrit Bharat Express will operate on a weekly schedule. The train is slated to depart from SMVT Bengaluru every Saturday and will arrive at Alipurduar on Monday. The return journey will commence from Alipurduar on Mondays, concluding back in Bengaluru on Thursdays.
Formal Launch and Passenger Impact
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to formally announce the launch of these new services later in January 2026. However, the Railway Board has not yet notified the exact operational start date for these trains.
The introduction of these routes is anticipated to significantly ease travel for passengers moving between southern India and eastern states like West Bengal and Odisha. It will particularly benefit those reliant on affordable, non-AC rail travel for long journeys. The enhanced connectivity is also expected to reduce pressure on existing trains operating on these high-demand routes.
Changed Coach Plans and Future Demands
Initially, plans were afoot to equip all three new routes with Amrit Bharat coaches. However, in a revision, the trains destined for Balurghat and Radhikapur have been shifted to standard express configurations. This change is likely due to operational considerations or rolling stock constraints.
While regular commuters have welcomed the announcement, many have pointed out the need for even more services. Passengers have highlighted that states like Bihar and Jharkhand also require better long-distance rail connectivity with southern India, indicating areas for future network expansion.
This strategic addition of trains fortifies the rail bridge between Karnataka and multiple regions of West Bengal, promising a smoother travel experience for thousands and fostering stronger socio-economic ties between the two regions.
