Nagpur: Hyderabad-based AMR India Limited has secured the bid to develop the Nagpur-Multimodal Logistics Park, commonly known as the Sindi dry port, for the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML). This development follows the termination of the contract with the previous concessionaire, Delta Corp, due to delays in project execution.
Project Background
The dry port, located at Sindi town near the Nagpur-Wardha district border, is a flagship initiative of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. It is part of the PM Gati Shakti network and is expected to serve as a crucial logistics hub for the region.
Contract Termination and Legal Proceedings
NHLML, a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), stated that Delta Corp failed to meet stage-by-stage milestones after being awarded the contract. As a result, the company moved to terminate the agreement. In response, Delta Corp has approached the court seeking a stay on the fresh bid until the arbitration process with NHLML over the contract cancellation is resolved. A hearing on the matter is scheduled. Delta Corp has appointed an arbitrator, and NHLML is expected to appoint another. The two arbitrators will then select a third to form a full arbitration bench.
Next Steps
NHLML will now scrutinize the documents submitted by AMR India, and the final agreement is expected to be signed shortly, according to sources.
Strategic Importance
The Sindi dry port is projected to be a key logistics infrastructure for the region, providing regional connectivity and linking Vidarbha to Bangladesh via a riparian route. This is expected to substantially reduce freight costs. Gadkari has been working on this project since his previous tenure in the government.
