Stock Markets End Flat After Retreating From Day's Highs

Indian stock markets ended flat on Wednesday after retreating from their intra-day highs, as weak trends in global markets and relentless foreign fund outflows made investors cautious, according to analysts.

Market Performance

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty both gave up early gains to close nearly unchanged. The 30-share Sensex settled at 52,456.23, down 12.34 points or 0.02 percent, while the broader Nifty closed at 15,678.90, slipping 4.15 points or 0.03 percent.

Key Factors Behind the Flat Close

  • Weak Global Cues: Asian and European markets traded mixed, with concerns over rising interest rates and slowing economic growth weighing on sentiment.
  • Foreign Fund Outflows: Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continued their selling spree, pulling out over Rs 1,200 crore from Indian equities in the past two sessions.
  • Profit Booking: After a recent rally, investors chose to book profits at higher levels, capping further upside.

Sectoral Trends

Among sectoral indices, IT and metal stocks witnessed selling pressure, while banking and auto shares managed to hold ground. The BSE IT index fell 0.8 percent, dragged by losses in Infosys and TCS. Meanwhile, the Nifty Bank index edged up 0.2 percent, supported by gains in HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.

Analyst Views

Market analysts attributed the volatility to a lack of fresh triggers. "Investors are cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week, as any hawkish stance could impact capital flows to emerging markets," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Outlook

Going forward, market participants will closely monitor global cues, including crude oil prices and the movement of the US dollar. Domestic factors such as monsoon progress and quarterly earnings reports will also influence market direction in the coming sessions.
