In a significant move to boost Delhi's infrastructure, the Public Works Department (PWD) is set to transfer the ambitious Munak Canal elevated road project to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for execution. The announcement was made by PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Wednesday, January 8, 2026.
Project Details and Strategic Handover
The proposed corridor is a massive 20-kilometer-long elevated road designed to connect Inderlok with Bawana in Northwest Delhi. Minister Singh revealed that the estimated cost for this crucial piece of infrastructure stands at approximately Rs 4,700 crore. While the Delhi government will provide the funding, the specialized execution expertise of the NHAI will be leveraged to bring the project to fruition.
The decision to involve NHAI was formally approved in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta earlier this week. A key factor behind this strategic handover is the project's requirement for land acquisition along the sensitive Haryana-Delhi border, a process where the central agency's experience is considered vital.
Status and Expected Impact on Traffic
Minister Singh stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is nearly complete. Once finalized, the tendering process will commence to kickstart preliminary and civil work on the ground. The primary objective of this large-scale flyover is to drastically reduce chronic traffic congestion in the heavily populated Outer Delhi regions.
The Munak Canal itself is a vital water channel that runs through Haryana and Delhi, originally built to ensure efficient water supply to the capital. This new plan repurposes its alignment as the base for a modern transportation corridor, showcasing multi-utility infrastructure planning.
Integration with Delhi's Road Network
Beyond the direct Inderlok-Bawana link, the elevated road is strategically planned to integrate with the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).
