The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has given the green light to a significant urban transformation, approving multiple skyscraper projects that are reshaping the city's skyline. During Thursday's standing committee meeting, officials discussed and approved construction plans for buildings exceeding 70 meters in height, marking a new era of vertical growth for Gujarat's largest city.
Massive Revenue Generation from Tall Buildings
The AMC has generated an impressive ₹250 crore in revenue from development permissions granted to 17 tall buildings over the past two years. All these high-rise structures have been exclusively approved for construction in the western part of Ahmedabad, indicating a clear pattern of development concentration in this rapidly growing sector of the city.
These 17 approved skyscrapers will collectively comprise 2,000 residential units and 2,300 commercial spaces, significantly boosting the city's real estate inventory. The town development department has already issued a Building Use permission certificate for one landmark structure exceeding 100 meters in height located on Sola Science City Road, scheduled for completion in 2025.
Western Ahmedabad Emerges as Skyscraper Hub
Developers and builders are showing tremendous interest in constructing skyscrapers in western Ahmedabad, particularly in areas including SG Highway, Sola Science City Road, and surrounding localities. The Bodakdev area has emerged as the epicenter of this vertical revolution, with construction plans approved for seven skyscraper buildings - the highest concentration in the city.
Currently, a commercial building standing at 147.95 meters on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Bodakdev ward holds the title of Ahmedabad's tallest structure. This ground plus 34-floor building represents the current pinnacle of the city's architectural achievements. However, even taller projects are in the pipeline, with construction plans for commercial buildings reaching 150 meters submitted to the state government's special technical committee for approval.
City's Skyline Transformation Accelerates
The scale of Ahmedabad's vertical expansion becomes clear when examining the broader approval statistics. The AMC has approved construction plans for 30 buildings exceeding 100 meters in height, with 23 being residential towers and 7 purely commercial structures. An additional five buildings are currently undergoing the approval process, suggesting the skyscraper trend is far from over.
Beyond the municipal corporation's jurisdiction, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority has approved eight more buildings over 100 meters in height. This brings the total count to 38 buildings exceeding 100 meters approved across Ahmedabad city and the surrounding AUDA area, painting a picture of a metropolitan region embracing vertical urbanism on an unprecedented scale.
The forthcoming buildings promise to redefine the city's architectural landscape, with some structures planned to have more than 45 floors. This rapid vertical growth reflects Ahmedabad's emergence as a major metropolitan center capable of supporting sophisticated high-rise infrastructure while generating substantial municipal revenue through development permissions.
