Western Railway Suburban Earnings Surge to Rs 873 Crore in FY 2025-26
Mumbai: Western Railway's suburban passenger earnings have demonstrated a robust financial performance, climbing to Rs 873 crore in the financial year 2025-26. This marks a significant increase from the Rs 840 crore recorded in the previous financial year, representing a growth of nearly 4% year-on-year. This positive trend emerges even as the average daily ridership on the network continues to linger below the levels observed before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Passenger Count and Revenue Metrics Show Divergent Trends
The suburban originating passenger count for Western Railway crossed 110.4 crore in this financial year, compared with 107.98 crore last year, indicating a rise of 2.43%. However, railway data reveals that the network is currently handling an average of 29.52 lakh suburban passengers daily. This figure remains lower than the pre-Covid daily average of 34.87 lakh passengers, highlighting a persistent gap in ridership recovery.
Despite the lower passenger numbers, the daily average suburban revenue has shown a remarkable improvement, rising to Rs 2.39 crore. This surpasses the pre-pandemic daily average revenue of Rs 2.12 crore, underscoring a shift in revenue generation dynamics on the western suburban network.
AC Local Services Drive Earnings Growth
Officials have attributed the stronger earnings performance primarily to the rapid rise in air-conditioned (AC) local train usage. Before the pandemic, AC EMU services carried an average of 20,000 passengers daily and generated Rs 7.74 lakh in daily revenue. The growth momentum has continued robustly into the current year, with March 2026 recording the highest-ever monthly AC EMU revenue of Rs 24.57 crore. This achievement surpasses the previous record of Rs 21.83 crore set in October 2025.
AC EMU ridership also reached a new peak, with 53.97 lakh passengers in March 2026. This is higher than the earlier record of 46.6 lakh passengers recorded in June 2025. These figures collectively underline how Western Railway has successfully improved its per-passenger revenue realisation.
Premium Services Elevate Financial Performance
The data clearly indicates that premium suburban services are now playing a much larger role in earnings growth for Western Railway. This strategic shift has enabled revenue recovery to outpace ridership recovery on the western suburban network. The increased adoption of AC local trains reflects a changing passenger preference and willingness to pay for enhanced comfort, which has directly contributed to the financial uplift.
As Western Railway continues to navigate post-pandemic recovery, the focus on premium services appears to be a key factor in bolstering its financial health, even as overall passenger numbers work towards regaining pre-Covid levels.
