Worker dies in stone quarry accident in Rourkela, protest erupts

Tension prevailed in Kalunga area of Rourkela on Monday following the death of a worker in an accident at Gotidhara stone quarry under Kalunga police outpost. The incident triggered outrage among villagers, who accused the quarry management of gross negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible along with Rs 50 lakh compensation for the deceased worker's family.

Accident Details

According to sources, a boulder fell on the head of a labourer, Harman Aind (55), as stone extraction and transportation work was underway at quarry no. 3 on Monday. Aind sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Rourkela Government Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Villagers Protest

As news of the incident spread, a large number of villagers gathered at the quarry site and staged a protest. They alleged that the accident took place due to the absence of proper safety measures at the quarry. The protesters demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the family of the deceased and strict legal action against the quarry management.

Police Response

Police officials from Kalunga police outpost reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. After a long discussion, a compensation of Rs 12 lakh was finalised. Sub-inspector S Dehury of Kalunga police outpost said, “We have registered a case of negligence against the quarry management.”

The incident highlights the lack of safety measures in stone quarries in the region, raising concerns about the welfare of workers. Further investigation is underway.
