Volkswagen India Unveils Premium Three-Row Tayron R-Line SUV

Volkswagen India has recently introduced the new Volkswagen Tayron R-Line three-row SUV to the Indian market, marking a significant expansion of its premium vehicle lineup. Positioned strategically above the popular Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron R-Line now sits at the pinnacle of Volkswagen's offerings in India, targeting buyers seeking a seven-seat SUV with German engineering and enhanced premium positioning.

Design: A Stretched and Sophisticated Silhouette

The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is essentially a stretched, seven-seat derivative of the Tiguan R-Line, featuring larger overall dimensions to comfortably accommodate a third row of seats. Its front design closely mirrors the Tiguan R-Line, with subtle distinctions such as a revised grille that sets it apart. Notable visual elements include an illuminated Volkswagen emblem paired with a full-width LED light bar, creating a distinct identity, while the bumper is finished in gloss black for a sportier appeal.

From the side, the Tayron's elongated silhouette clearly indicates its three-row configuration. It rides on 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, similar to those on the Tiguan R-Line, which fill the wheel arches effectively, complemented by slim gloss black cladding. Premium touches include an R badge on the front doors and chrome accents around the window line. At the rear, the SUV follows a clean, modern design with a connected LED tail-lamp setup featuring pixel-style lighting elements, offering a distinctive night-time signature, and a gloss black bumper that ties the design together.

Interior and Features: Premium Comfort and Technology

Inside, the Tayron R-Line's cabin is very similar to the Tiguan R-Line, centered around a large 15-inch touchscreen angled towards the driver, controlling most vehicle functions. The leather-appointed front seats retain the massage function from the Tiguan but replace seat heating with front-seat ventilation, better suited to Indian climates. Additional highlights include:

  • A fully digital instrument cluster
  • A panoramic sunroof
  • Customizable ambient lighting with up to 30 colour options
  • Matrix LED lighting technology

In terms of practicality, the SUV offers up to 850 litres of boot space with the third row folded down, enhancing its utility for families and long trips.

Engine and Performance: Robust Powertrain

Under the hood, the Tayron is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, sending power to all four wheels, ensuring a dynamic driving experience. The same powertrain is also used in the Tiguan R-Line, providing proven reliability and performance.

Platform, Dimensions, and Safety: Built for Security

Built on the MQB EVO architecture shared with the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron benefits from an extended wheelbase of 2,789 mm, approximately 109 mm longer to accommodate the third row. Key dimensions include:

  • Length: 4792 mm
  • Width: 1866 mm
  • Height: 1665 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2789 mm
  • Ground clearance: 181 mm
  • Boot space: 345 litres (with all rows up) and 850 litres (with third row folded)

Safety is a top priority, with features including Level 2 ADAS, nine airbags, ESC, hill-start and hill-descent controls, and a 360-degree camera. The Tayron has secured a five-star overall crash safety rating in Euro NCAP, achieving scores of 87% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection.

Expected Price, Launch Date, and Rivals

The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will be introduced in India via the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route, a strategy aimed at keeping pricing competitive. It is expected to be priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), with the price announcement anticipated in February 2026. Local assembly is already underway at Volkswagen's plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Upon launch, it will compete with rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, the upcoming MG Majestor, Jeep Meridian, and the Skoda Kodiaq in the Indian market.
