Deadly Boiler Explosion Rocks Vedanta Thermal Plant in Chhattisgarh
A catastrophic boiler explosion at the Vedanta Limited Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant in Sakti district on Tuesday afternoon has claimed the lives of at least 10 workers and left 23 others with severe, critical burn injuries. This tragic incident marks one of the state's most devastating industrial accidents in recent memory, sparking widespread panic and initiating a massive, urgent rescue operation.
Timeline and Immediate Aftermath of the Blast
The powerful explosion occurred between approximately 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM at unit number 1 within the plant, which is situated in Singhitarai village near the Dabhra police station area. Police and administrative officials swiftly rushed to the site upon receiving alerts, coordinating with fire tenders and specialized rescue teams to launch comprehensive evacuation and relief efforts.
Preliminary investigations by police authorities suggest the blast was likely triggered by a tube rupture, which caused a high-pressure steam leak that subsequently led to the explosion in the coal-fired boiler system. The force of the blast created scenes of chaos and confusion inside the plant premises, with workers desperately fleeing amid intense heat and thick, billowing smoke.
Official Confirmation of Casualties and Rescue Efforts
District Collector Amrit Vikas Topno and Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur have officially confirmed the multiple fatalities. They reported that 33 workers suffered severe burns in the incident, with ten tragically losing their lives and 23 currently undergoing medical treatment, including six individuals in extremely critical condition.
Of the ten workers who perished, four were declared dead at the scene while six succumbed to their injuries while being transported to hospitals. Rescue operations have now been formally called off, with all affected workers successfully evacuated from the site, according to SP Thakur, who personally supervised the relief efforts.
Medical Challenges and Remote Location Complications
The remote nature of Sakti district, which lacks immediate specialized healthcare facilities for critical burn cases, presented significant challenges. Injured workers were urgently transported to multiple medical facilities in neighboring Kharsia and Raigarh districts. Several critically injured individuals were being considered for emergency airlifting to specialized burn treatment units to receive advanced care.
Officials noted that due to the severity of the burns sustained by victims, identification of the workers has become particularly difficult. The SP confirmed that all affected individuals were contract workers primarily hailing from Jharkhand and Bihar, with their identities yet to be formally released to the public.
Political Reactions and Public Outcry
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has described the incident as "deeply tragic" and has ordered a thorough, impartial investigation into the explosion. He has assured strict action against those found responsible and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for all injured workers.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Ram Kumar Yadav staged a protest outside the plant premises, demanding adequate compensation for victims and greater accountability from the administration. Families of affected workers gathered at the site, seeking access to their injured relatives, which led to tense scenes requiring substantial police deployment to maintain order.
Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Leader of Opposition Charandas Mahant have also expressed profound grief over the tragedy, calling for proper treatment of the injured and appropriate compensation for victims' families.
Vedanta's Response and Ongoing Investigation
In an official statement, Vedanta management emphasized that their immediate priority remains providing comprehensive medical assistance to all affected individuals. The company confirmed it is fully cooperating with authorities to ascertain the precise cause of the accident.
The statement clarified that the personnel involved in the incident were from NGSL, a sub-contractor responsible for operating and maintaining the affected unit. "We are in the process of ascertaining the details and a thorough investigation has been initiated," the Vedanta management stated.
Officials have indicated that the situation remains fluid, with the possibility of the death toll rising as several victims continue to battle critical injuries in hospitals. The plant, operated by Vedanta Ltd with an installed capacity of 1,200 megawatts, had routine operations underway when the devastating explosion occurred.
