Triumph Motorcycles India Sets Ambitious Sales Target for Sub-400cc Bikes
Triumph Motorcycles India has announced an aggressive goal to sell 1 lakh units of its sub-400cc motorcycles within the next 15 months. This target comes after the company achieved its first 1 lakh sales in 30 months, indicating a significant acceleration in its market strategy.
Strategic Alliance and Manufacturing Efficiency
In 2023, Triumph entered into a non-equity alliance focused on manufacturing motorcycles ranging from 200cc to 750cc in India. This partnership combines British engineering expertise with Indian manufacturing efficiency, aiming to enhance production capabilities and market reach.
Manik Nangia, president of Bajaj Auto Ltd-Probiking, which handles Triumph and KTM brands, highlighted the company's growth. "When the Triumph brand was relaunched in partnership with Bajaj Auto, there were only 13-14 showrooms in the country. Now, we have expanded to 230 sales and service outlets across nearly 200 cities," Nangia stated. He added that the number of touchpoints is expected to increase to 400 by the end of this fiscal year.
Leveraging Lower GST Rates for Competitive Pricing
To capitalize on favorable tax policies, Bajaj Auto Probiking recalibrated the engines of its entire range from 400cc to 350cc. This adjustment allows the bikes to fall under the lower 18% GST slab applicable to motorcycles up to 350cc, compared to higher rates for larger engines.
As a result, Triumph has been able to reduce prices by Rs 10,000 to Rs 21,600 without compromising performance. The new range includes six 350cc models, such as the Speed 350, Scrambler 350 X, and Thruxton 350, with starting prices below Rs 2 lakh, making them more accessible to Indian consumers.
Global and Domestic Manufacturing Operations
While the 350cc bikes are manufactured in India for the domestic market, Triumph continues to produce 400cc motorcycles at its Chakan plant for global distribution. Additionally, higher-capacity models ranging from 660cc to 2,500cc are imported into India and marketed through the Probiking network.
Founded in 1902, Triumph is the largest UK-owned motorcycle manufacturer with a rich heritage. The company's recent initiatives in India reflect its commitment to expanding its footprint in one of the world's largest two-wheeler markets.
