Tirupati Hospitality Sector Alarmed Over LPG Shortage Amid Middle East Conflict

Concerns are escalating in Tirupati over a possible shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), particularly commercial cylinders, as the ongoing war-like situation in parts of the Middle East disrupts supply chains. The hospitality sector, which relies heavily on uninterrupted gas supply, has expressed serious apprehension, especially in Tirupati, where hotels and eateries cater to thousands of visiting devotees daily.

Reports of Disruptions Spark Anxiety

Reports of disruptions in commercial LPG supply have surfaced in several major cities, including Tirupati, sparking anxiety among hotel owners and restaurant operators. In response, the Tirupati Hotels and Restaurant Association (THARA) submitted a formal representation to the District Collector, seeking immediate intervention to address the crisis.

THARA has urged the administration to reconsider any reported decisions to suspend or reduce commercial gas supply to hotels, warning that such a move could plunge the hospitality sector into a severe crisis. The association acknowledged the challenges posed by the international conflict but stressed that suspending supply would push small and medium businesses into financial distress.

Impact on Tirupati's Hospitality Infrastructure

Industry estimates reveal that Tirupati boasts more than 600 lodges with hotel facilities, over 1,000 homestays and service apartments, collectively accounting for nearly 34,000 rooms. Additionally, hundreds of standalone hotels and eateries depend entirely on commercial LPG cylinders for daily cooking operations.

Hotel operators have cautioned that any interruption in supply could severely affect their operations, jeopardize thousands of livelihoods, and disrupt food availability for both residents and pilgrims. They also warned of possible price hikes and significant public inconvenience if the situation is not resolved promptly.

Appeal for Government Action and Alternatives

THARA has appealed to the government to restore regular supplies or arrange viable alternatives to prevent a collapse of the sector. Representatives noted that existing reserves may last only a week, and without restoration, the situation could worsen dramatically.

While some establishments are exploring alternatives such as firewood, they admitted that such options are impractical for large-scale operations. The association emphasized the need for swift government intervention to ensure the continuity of services in this critical pilgrimage hub.

The ongoing Middle East crisis, involving conflicts between Israel and Iran, has heightened global supply chain tensions, impacting essential commodities like LPG. This situation underscores the vulnerability of local industries to international geopolitical events.
