Tesla Accelerates Indian Expansion with New Model Launch and Infrastructure Push

Even as it navigates sluggish sales figures and intense competitive pressure from established rivals, Elon Musk's Tesla is significantly ramping up its operations within the Indian market. The electric vehicle (EV) pioneer is executing a dual strategy involving the introduction of a new product variant alongside a substantial expansion of its service and charging infrastructure across the country.

Launch of the Six-Seater Model Y L

On Wednesday, Tesla officially launched its six-seater Model Y L variant in India, strategically targeting affluent domestic households seeking spacious, premium electric vehicles. Priced starting at Rs 61.99 lakh, deliveries for this new model are scheduled to commence from the current quarter. Tesla's India head, Sharad Agarwal, stated the company aims to "disrupt" the luxury SUV segment in India, directly competing with players like Mercedes-Benz and MG in the luxury three-row EV category.

Challenging Market Entry and Sluggish Growth

Tesla's journey into India began in July 2025 with its Model Y SUVs, following years of delays attributed to high import tariffs, regulatory inflexibility, and charging infrastructure limitations. Despite a high-profile entry, the company's growth trajectory has been modest. Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) revealed Tesla recorded only 342 vehicle registrations in FY26. To stimulate demand and manage inventory, the firm has reportedly offered discounts of up to Rs 2 lakh on select Model Y variants.

A significant factor impacting Tesla's pricing and competitiveness is its reliance on imports. The cars sold in India incur steep import duties, resulting in substantially higher prices for Indian consumers compared to other global markets.

Building a Comprehensive Ecosystem

Undeterred by initial challenges, Tesla is laying the groundwork for long-term presence. The company has announced plans to aggressively expand its network of Supercharger stations across major metropolitan areas. Furthermore, Tesla will establish new body repair shops in key cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.

"We are building block by block a very strong foundation for the business and the brand in the future, focusing on building the entire ecosystem in India," emphasized Sharad Agarwal. This ecosystem approach is critical in a market where EVs currently constitute only about 4-5% of total passenger car sales, indicating both the challenge and the substantial growth potential that Tesla aims to capture.
