The Odisha state cabinet has given its official approval to a landmark proposal from Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) to set up a major solar manufacturing complex. The facility will be located within the Tata special economic zone (SEZ) in Ganjam district, marking a significant stride for the state's industrial and renewable energy sectors.
A Mega Investment in Green Technology
This ambitious project represents a colossal investment of Rs 10,000 crore. It is projected to generate a substantial number of employment opportunities, with estimates suggesting over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created across Odisha. State officials have highlighted that a considerable portion of these positions will be highly-skilled, which will serve to enhance the technical capabilities of Odisha's industrial workforce.
Phased Development and Manufacturing Capacity
The integrated manufacturing unit is planned to be developed in two distinct phases. Upon completion, it will boast an impressive production capacity of 10 GW for ingot-wafer and 5 GW for solar cell manufacturing. This establishment will be the first of its kind upstream solar manufacturing unit in Odisha, focusing on the initial, critical stages of solar panel production.
The project's impact is expected to extend far beyond its immediate premises. It is poised to act as a catalyst for the growth of numerous ancillary industries. Sectors such as glass, chemicals, packaging, logistics, and precision machinery are likely to see increased demand, creating further livelihood opportunities for local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Aligning with State and National Ambitions
The Odisha government has stated that this investment reflects strong investor confidence in the state's industrial infrastructure and policy environment. It strategically positions Odisha as a potential hub for renewable energy equipment manufacturing within India.
In an official statement, the government elaborated on the broader implications. The facility is anticipated to strengthen the upstream solar value chain within the state, reduce India's reliance on imports for crucial solar components, and directly support the national target of achieving 100 GW of domestic solar module manufacturing capacity by the year 2030.
Furthermore, the project is in perfect alignment with Odisha's own vision for promoting green industrialisation, attracting high-technology manufacturing, and diversifying its industrial base beyond traditional sectors.
