Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover Inaugurate New Greenfield Manufacturing Hub in Tamil Nadu
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. (TMPV) and its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover Automotive (JLR) have officially commenced operations at their newly established manufacturing facility located in Panapakkam, within Tamil Nadu's Ranipet district. This significant development marks the activation of the first phase of a greenfield plant dedicated to producing next-generation vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs), for both the TMPV and JLR brands.
Inauguration and Initial Production
The facility was inaugurated in a ceremony led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Tata Sons and TMPV Chairman N. Chandrasekaran. The event was attended by state ministers, government officials, and senior leadership from Tata Motors and JLR. The first vehicle to roll out from this plant is the locally manufactured Range Rover Evoque, signaling the start of production at this advanced site.
Investment and Production Plans
TMPV has committed to investing approximately ₹9,000 crore in the Panapakkam facility as part of its long-term manufacturing expansion strategy. Vehicle production will be scaled up in phases, with the plant projected to achieve its full annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles over the next five to seven years. The output from this facility is designed to serve both domestic and international markets, enhancing Tata Motors' global footprint.
Employment and Skill Development Initiatives
The new plant is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, while also supporting the growth of an ancillary supplier ecosystem in the region. The facility is operated by shopfloor technicians recruited from across Tamil Nadu through Tata Motors' Lakshya programme. This earn-while-you-learn initiative focuses on skill development and career progression.
Participants in the Lakshya programme were selected via a state-wide assessment of polytechnic graduates and underwent five months of specialized training at JLR facilities. The programme offers participants the opportunity to pursue a company-sponsored B.Tech degree while continuing their employment, fostering long-term career growth and technical expertise.
Sustainability and Environmental Commitment
The Panapakkam facility has been meticulously designed to operate entirely on renewable energy and is planned to be water positive. It incorporates advanced manufacturing processes aimed at reducing emissions and meeting stringent global environmental standards, aligning with Tata Motors' commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly operations.
